Peace Conference Begins at Versailles - 1919

On this date begins the Versailles peace conference that officially ended World War I. It was attended by 70 delegates representing the coalition of the 27 victorious countries in World War I, but was politically dominated by the so-called "Big Four", the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Italy. The main document produced by the conference was the Treaty of Versailles, signed June 28, 1919, which defined the terms of peace with the defeated nations. The conference was closed on January 20, 1920. The purpose of this treaty was to set a new political map of Europe, war reparations and define the demilitarization conditions of the defeated countries in order to reduce their military forces. Brazil sent an entourage headed by future President Epitácio Pessoa and was also one of the founding countries of the League of Nations.
