Proclamation of the Mexican Constitution - 1917
After 7 years of revolution, Mexican President Venustiano Carranza proclaims the contemporary Mexican Constitution, which promises the restitution of land to native peoples, the separation of church power from the state, and radical educational and economic reforms. The progressive political document, approved by an elected constitutional congress, combined revolutionary land claims with advanced social theory. Nevertheless, it would have to be decades before the promises of the Constitution were made. Carranza was deposed and later assassinated in 1920, and the stability of the country evaporated until after World War II, when private industrialization by war became part of the Mexican economy and Miguel Alemán became the first of a wide range of civil presidents.
